Description
This is the Transept of the Crystal Palace building which was built near London for the Great Exhibition of 1851.
Over 233 designs were submitted for the building to house the "Great Exhibition of the Works of All Nations." Joseph Paxton produced his design for a Crystal Palace on a piece of blotting paper, then submitted the final design in less than 9 days. The building itself was erected in just six months, a remarkable feat for a building with 293,655 panes of glass, 330 huge iron columns, and 24 miles of guttering.
The building featured the largest roof ever made, and stood out in London architecture. To complement the mass of glass, the building was decorated in red, green, and blue, and the iron columns were variegated with yellow stripes.
The Exhibition contained just about everything. America brought stuffed squirrels and a McCormack Reaper. Lucifer matches were the latest modern convenience, an envelope making machine could do 60 units a minute, and, of course, steam.
Regrettably, the Crystal Palace is no longer with us although, not without some irony, the concrete dinosaurs which populated the gardens in the first rebuilt Palace in Hyde Park are still going strong.
This was my entry for the Bryce October Challenge. Thank you for viewing.

Love the History behind your work here! 6 months is a short time for such a drastic building.I work as a framer on homes when I'm not pulling wire so the history of this work is interesting to me.Chere and I would like to see another view sometime as this is wonderful work!!!!!
