Description

Liz walked and talked with her new friend. She had found him in the forest, breathless from running. He was being chased by the Great Owl that lived in the forest. She scooped him up and with a fist raised high, she chastised the Great Owl for picking on the little mouse. After the owl flew off, she turned her attention to the wee creature in her hand: "It's a glorious day and since we have just met under less than desirable conditions, what say you and I take a walk and have a chat. I am called Liz. Elizabeth is my real name, but my mother is the only one who calls me that. Prey tell, what is your name?" "I am Gray...er, Gray the Mighty. OK, maybe not so mighty to you, but to me I am the bravest and fiercest mouse in all the land!" He chuckled to himself and then thanked Liz for saving him. "You are the bravest I have ever met Gray! Here you were in death's clutches but a moment before and now look at you! You are even jovial! And laughing as well! That was a very cruel owl and I hope he starves this winter for picking on you!" "Oh no dear Liz! You mustn't say such things. My world and yours are very different. The Great Owl was only hunting. He has to to survive. I know that for me, survival is perilous and I may not live that long...such is for the creatures of the forest. But I have watched man. He does terrible things for such useless reasons that hurt others. I don't understand this Liz. I know not all humans are like this. Some have been very kind to me, like you. But the others...I don't understand...how can humans have so much love for each other, yet be so cruel? Even evil sometimes. I have seen a child give a very poor man her bread and water when that's all she had for the day. I have also had the sadness of seeing men kill each other for reasons I guess this poor mouse just can't grasp. Please tell me how to understand this Liz." Liz had to turn her gaze away from her mighty little friend. She couldn't look him in the eye. She couldn't tell him the ways of the world. She didn't understand either. How was she to explain that which was beyond her comprehension as well? "Gray, I cannot answer your question. I do not have an answer that will satisfy us both. Perhaps we should walk and think about this for a while? Please join me at my home and let's eat and drink and talk. I shall enjoy having you as my guest. Will you accept my invitation?" Not one to ever turn down a good meal, Gray accepted quickly. "Good, then let us journey to my home. It is not far at all. I am very glad I met you Gray!" "I am very glad as well Liz!"
