Or "Over-exposed photograph in poorly lit conditions" Figured the former was shorter, thus better.
Modeled in Autocad 2004, rendered in Bryce.
About an hour of modeling, an hour of lighting... it was a pain to get this close.
Gel maps were used on a wide spotlight to get the look on the wall. 6 other lights were used throughout the room to get ambient lighting. One bright light was used inside the candle with the alpha flame (in hindsight too bright).
The final render took about 6 hours.. ick.. I like how it turned out though.
It is meant to look like an overly exposed photograph of this subject at night. The grain was added in post, as well as several other adjustments. I messed it up a little bit using a rough smudge.. no idea why. Just felt like it.

Very photorealistic, love it. I don't think the flame is too bright though, it just blends too well with the brightly lit glass.

6 hours for that picture seems pretty good compromise to me. I think it's great. The best picture I've seen today. Although I've only just logged on ;-)

For the flame I painted a simple alpha map in photoshop and used it on a 2d plane in bryce. Right on the plane I used a volumetric omni with cubic falloff to give the glowing feel.
