Description
I have been a long time fan
of Rutger Hauer. He is most
often known for his roles as
the bad guy, but I first came
across him in the movie "Ladyhawke"
(1985) with Michelle Pfeiffer and
Matthew Broderick, John Wood and Leo
McKern. It is a wonderfully romantic
tale of two lovers (Hauer and Pfeifer)
who had a vicious spell cast upon
them by the jealous "Bishop of Aquila".
Navarre (Hauer, a wolf by night,
and Isabeau (Pfeiffer), an eagle by
day, were only able to get a passing
glimpse of each other at every sunrise
and sunset. Broderick was very humerous
in the film and along with the help of
Father Imperius, the often intoxicated
Monk (McKern), they found a way to break
the spell cast upon them by the Bishop of
Aquila (Wood). It's a wonderfully romantic
and very funny movie at times. If you've
not seen it, I would highly recommend it.
Anyway, the other day, I was watching
"the Tenth Kingdom", another magical film,
in which Rutger Hauer was one of the bad guys
and I began to sketch him. I used H, HB, and
2B pencils...then I took the sketch, after I
had spruced it up a bit, and did some
postwork in PSP8. The frame, matting and mask
were all done in PSP8 along with adding the
eye and soft focus.
As far as copyright credits are concerned, I
am not quite sure what to put down since I just sketched it while I watched the DVD...but I
will give credit to Artisan (FOX Video)
since they made the DVD.
I hope you enjoy the sketch! Thanks
for taking the time to look and for commenting!

Cheryl, Your work just keeps getting better and better, and I must say in my humble opinion that this is the best one you have done yet from a artistic standpoint, the hair looks great, and the unshaven look is captured to perfection.......John

You've made him real. This is fine pencil work. Now I feel I know not only the actor but his characterization which you have captured.

Ladyhawke is one of my favorite movies. It has always been a classic in my mind, and Rutger Hauer as Navarre really made that film. He was recently in Smallville for a few episodes and it was good to see him again. As for the portrait, as always you captured his essense very well, I love the deep eyes...
