Description

"He's not going to make it..." Ellis frowned and turned around to Thompson, the young private supporting the injured Kale as they rested for a moment in the corridor Sigma Nine Five Seven was supposed to be a straightforward search and secure. An abandoned mining colony from the Kerium rush had left many of the asteroids in the Cryser Belt rich pickings for quick start mining operations. But the asteroids were small and many of the mining stations were exhausted in a few years leaving a myriad of derelict bases, orbiting ore processing facilities and cargo mass drivers. Much of the Belt were havens for smugglers, pirates and fugitives. Ellis had led a six-man squad into Sigma Nine Five Seven, a recon satelite picking up increased power emissions demanded investigation. Nobody knew what was going on until it was too late, what was assumed to be a pirate base, was in fact an overloading reactor. Ellis and Thompson had been in Command and Control when the initial blast had taken place, three of the squad were dead by lethal exposure within seconds. Kale had bene working in an auxiliary corridor, by the time Thompson and Ellis had found him, he was heavily contaminated. Ellis leant against the wall, his own body was feeling the effects of the extreme radiation, he felt sick to his stomach, his limbs heavy and weak. Thompson didn't look any better than he felt. The power gone, their equipment overloaded by the radiation, he could only hope he could find the shuttle bay and get back to their ship before it was too late. --- Decotec by Moebius87, where would we be without him. the lighting and textural quality are superb. i'd suggest bending the injured one's knees a bit more to communicate the "weight" on the one assisting him.

Sorry, Acewhirl, I'm no expert on what the effects of radiation would be like, but I'm sure that burns and exposed flesh would be more appropriate than gashes. I'm guessing though that this blast would be at least 100 rad (1 rad = 1,000 mrem *milliroentgen equivallent to man) about the size of a one-megaton bomb. The shielding in the complex would help buffer direct effects and probably induce extreme radiation sickness, so in this case I think jarm's done a pretty good depiction.

The skewed camera angle, lighting and the claustrophobic composition... and the monochromatic tint to your image are all very thoughtfully brought together and very well executed. Well done!
