Description
MOUNTAIN HUT COMPETITION
Architect: Simonen Design
The University of California, Berkeley, College of Environmental Design and The Wiener Family Fund for Public Architecture and Landscape hosted an international competition for the design of a 60 to 80-person wilderness base camp facility for overnight stays. The competition project site is near a tail that leads into the Palisade Glacier in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Central California. (http://www.ced.berkeley.edu/competitions/overview.htm)
The design project by Simonen Design features wilderness moutain hut that incorporates a combination of sustainable and environmentally responsible building material systems, regenerating energy resources such as heat, water filtration and reclamation systems and embeded information guidance aids. The pictured image illustrates the acceptance of natural lighting from the exterior into the interior spaces via diffused panels, and glazing. The structural system allows for a energetic roof slope system of sweeps that fit into the natural and scenic backdrop of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
