Hi, my name is Karl Stöcker, and I was born a long time ago, way too long, in Berchtesgaden, Germany, grew up in Düsseldorf, and since 1966 have been in the US (mostly). I've traveled a lot, 46 countries by this time, and I am planning on many more. I've spent a couple of decades in the US military, active and reserve, and since retirement from civil service, worked off and on as a high school science teacher in a suburb of Sacramento. Ever since my original ID's Doom days, back when it was just released on a floppy disk as a free level advertisement, I was interested in learning about 3D CGI, but I didn't get started until I retired from civil service in 1996. Since then I have been working with Truespace, Bryce, then Lightwave 3D, and Vue. Also dabbled a little in Poser 4, but just bought Poser 6 and am starting sink my teeth into that a bit. My website, http://www.cosmic-pearl.com/, has more details on me, should anyone not be bored to tears by now, also there are LW Viking ship and Star Wars X-Wing tutorials, as well as downloadable meshes (which can be imported into Vue, BTW) - my free stuff to the CG community.

Based on the old plum blossom tsuba (shown at my website), I carried the theme all the way through menpo and kabuto. I used lots of reference photos to get some historical accuracy established, even though it is essentially a unique creation. Sas_lite was used for the horse-hair mustache. Many of the war masks (menpo) had such hair included in varying lenghts. The rings on the side of the menpo were used to fasten the mask to the kabuto (helmet). Typically, there would be also some small neck protection plates at the bottom of the menpo, but that would have made this particular composition very awkward, so I didn't bother to include them. The little brass fastener midway up the helmet is one of four that hold the helmet liner. The helmet decoration is one of a number of possibles. Some even had animals (rabbits) and dragons mounted on them, or had actual stag horns inplace of the brass device. Hope you enjoy it.

great work! try killing teh ambient light though. and turn the sopt light into an area light it'll look more dramatic with better shadows!

Thanks, I have three area lights in this picture and one point light, as filler. Ambient intensity is off. More dramatic shadows, with the metal as dark as it is, makes the whole thing almost unrecognizable (see menpo, which is why I added light # 4). VOID, this may be all I want to do with this topic for now. This is a hobby, after all, and I had planned to do this particular still life with all the detail I could manage. It turns out, I am pretty happy with it as it is.

Superb! Your work, and all the research you put into it, is incredible. Your attention to detail and historical accuracy (without compromising your own artistic integrity) has my admiration. Very well done, sir!

I see it Reverse Blade Sword, Rurouni Kenshin. I love the picture. Not the purple tho.

Great textures and the model is fantastic!

Sorry DS326. I like Kenshin too. Great story, but this one has the hamon where it belongs, on the curved side of the sword. Look at the letters on the brass helmet decoration. Those go with Inuyasha. Another great animee yarn.
