Description

In the cemetery of Montmartre (Paris), the grave chapel that hosts Edgar Degas with his family is next to the chapel of a princess, some Comtesse Marie Potocka Princess Poltikoff. Modest, in humble stone is his, without any decoration, with a simple cross and an etched writing. Rich, and decorated is hers, with gold and decorations and statues, and steeples pointing to the sky. Yet, nobody has memory of her anymore. The tomb is deserted. The gold and statues speak to nobody, and tell nothing, except about the waste of such oblivion. While on the door of the painter, a caring soul of today who was most certainly born after the artist died, just placed a living flower. And this simple act of love and gratitude, speaks to us about eternity. I was so moved by this scene, that I had trouble going away from there, in spite of the heavy rain and of the fact that I was without umbrella. Never, in my life, I saw anything that could so well express what the beautiful holy and immortal art is, that Richard Wagner wrote about. I hope that my picture, taken with difficulty, is enough to tell such a big story. I took this picture last month, but I first when to this place in 1995, the first time I went to Paris, and since then, I always go there every time I am in Paris. I can actually say that the Montmartre Cemetery is probably the place in Paris that I love the most. I took so many pictures of it. Someday, I'll pick the best ones and make an album of them. Thanks for viewing.
