So cute! I dread to think what it was like to actually ride a penny farthing, but I could have quite easily spent them :) Beautiful render Carol, you little girls are always a joy to view.

Ok you stumped me on this one, had to look it up!Abbr. f. A coin formerly used in Great Britain worth one fourth of a penny. Something of very little value. Now I realise your picture says it all, and a wonderful picture it is, something you would see hanging in an art gallery, lovely composition, texturing and colors. Would make a great lithograph. Very impressive indeed!

Hey Trudy...after reading your comment I also went and looked it up and here is what I found: A Penny farthing is a bicycle that was developed between 1870 and 1878 which became a popular mode of transport till 1892 when the safety bicycle a style that we all now use came into production. The penny farthing bicycle came in many sizes in order to fit small children and tall adults. The Coventry Machinists company of England advertised in their 1880 catalogue bicycles from 38 inches to 58 inches. So bicycle clubs were very popular, with riders that were very competitive and, who would go out in all types of weather to challenge each other to clock up long distances and fast times. At the height of the penny farthing boom there were over 500 companies producing these bicycles, but now they are only available from custom builders but originals are much sort after by veteran bicycle collectors. :-)

After reading all there is to know about a Penny Farthing, I feel I owe you a lot more than a penny! Very informative and a truly cute image Carol! Reminds me of asking my little Sister to take my bike home from near neighbors. She was 5 and I was 12, the bike was to big for her to ride, but she still felt 10ft tall! Bravo!
