Not bad at all for your first render. Cool artwork!

Pretty good start I'd say. The character could use a better texture, though, he looks a bit like plastic now. Pose, lighting and background are good. His grip on the sword is better than what you usually see here. You might want to rotate the sword for about 90 degrees around the handle, so that he would strike with the edge of the blade, instead of the flat.
