Experiment in Bryce using the Fractal Flower (also modeled in Bryce).

In case anyone wonders, I took my fractal flower terrain, carved a hole in the sand with it, then placed a plane just under the sand with the original fractal flower image as a texture and the same bump applied world for both plane and sand.
