Description

This is a photo of Mount Ngauruhoe in Tongariro National Park, New Zealand. In the background the snow capped Mount Ruapehu can be seen. The picture was taken from the summit of Mount Tongariro in January 2004. These three mountains are all active volcanoes. Several scenes from the Lord of the Rings films were shot around Mount Ruapehu and Mount Ngauruhoe was used as Mount Doom in the films.

Great prehistorc landscape. There's bound to be some T-Rex's running about snapping at Raquel Welsh somewhere down there! Can you get up to the crater rim on these hills?

This picture was taken from the one of the crater rims of Mount Tongariro. You can get to the crater rims of the other volcanoes as well but I didn't on this visit. Maybe one day I will.
