Whew! Coloring is hard work when you do it the first time. I used an airbrushing-a-portrait article from a magazine for guidance, but that didn't work so well with photoshop. My experience is that it's probably best to begin with a flat shaded image, then apply cell-style shading and then use the airbrush tool to refine the shading until it's smooth enough...
Does anybody know a simple but cool looking technique for interesting backgrounds? I used a black background first, but that was sooo boooring that I came up with the actual gradient.
Comments and hints would be appreciated. Thanks for looking

Very nice work. I'd suggest doing full body scene with same character next time.. maybe clothes on also. As for your question for backgrounds.. trust me there is no easy way. Of course there is always programs like bryce that make nice 3D backgrounds, but I don't think they work well for 2D character (unless you really know what your doing).. I usually paint background and character separately if I'm doing 2D scene.. I'll always start with painting sky first, then ground and so on.. everything with it's own layer. I find this technique best suitable for me, but it is never really easy..

Lovely drawing and colouring! If you add a tiny bit of noise to a gradient background it gets rid of the banding.
