Description

Antelope Canyon is what is known as a "slot canyon". It is a very narrow canyon that is actually narrower at the top, and rather cavelike, and it is carved out of sandstone by the rushing waters of flash floods during the rainy seasons. Parts of northern Arizona and southern Utah are riddled with these canyons, of which Antelope Canyon is among the most famous. These canyons display breathtaking colors as the sun plays on the various faces of rock. Do not get caught in one when it is raining or shortly afterward; you could be killed by a flood of water in what seemed to be a perfectly dry canyon! These photos are intended to accompany my display of a slot canyon made in Terragen. To see that, go here. Comments in other languages welcome.

Very strange and beautiful these slot canyons. I've never heard of them before you introduced them in the TG gallery.

@ ariz: I used a Pentax ZX-M with a 55mm Pentax lens, wide open, and ASA 800 and 400 Fujicolor, handheld, at 1/4 of a second or longer, for most of the photographs. As the day wore on, it did get brighter, and I was later able to get some shots that took only 1/30th of a second, but earlier in the day, I was hand holding for a second or longer, frequently. Obviously, some of these didn't turn out sharp, but a surprising number did. Next time, I'll take a tripod! :)

Pat, this is an exciting photo. Slot canyon exploring makes for great hiking adventures. I can hardly wait to see the TG version.
