I've been working on a Flash web site for one of my clients (due to be debuted in the next week or two, just waiting for last minute content changes right now) and took their current 2D logo, which was flat and somehwat lifeless, and turned it into this. After playing with it for a while, it seemed just so natural that it should be a 3D logo, and as the rendering shows, its is VERY photogenic at most angles, but this one is a goodie from the left.
It might be the best logo I've ever worked on to date.

Your right about it needing to be in 3D. Try Lightwave or MAX and lets see what else you got!
