Description
I got up to a cold desert morning. I really wanted to check out that hole, but beans and eggs were calling me. Yep I was alone and had to do the cooking again.
By the time all the eating and cleaning was done the sun was up and promising a warm day.
I walked over to the hole and looked down into it. Where the edge was straight you could see it had been worked and the dirt pushed to the bottom.. Strange. No sign of quartz or gold.
As the sun was not fully up I could not see the bottom but I could make out something. Guess it's Sagebrush blown in the hole.
The sun got up to where I could see down the hole. There was a lot of Sagebrush, but there was also something else..
I ran a stake into the ground and tied the rope good and tight. Didn't want to stay down there. It was as least 40 ft to the bottom. I kicked and pushed the sagebrush out of the way, did a little digging and found bones..
Where the water had washed down into hole was were the bodies were. The run off had washed some of the dirt off and thats what I saw from the top.
Found 2 skeletons and 2 more skulls. The 2 skeletons were shot in the head and the 2 skull's had been chopped off. The Spanish didn't kill the ones who buried the treasure like pirates.
The marks on top showed it was a shovel, but not like the Spanish used. I looked around and didn't find any pieces of clothes. Figured I'd better get up out of there.. Those bones were a lot younger than the 1800's, maybe only a couple of decades old.
I got up that rope fast and looked around. I covered all sign that I had been there. Don't need some checking on their hiding place and knowing I found it..
I went over to the rim and looked down into the canyon. I will need to find a way down for me and the mules. Next way-point Steps by the Water..
To be Continiued..
