When using Photoshop to paint a sketch, make sure you work with a few different background color's during your process. Will allow you to see the white spots better.

Since you have PS, you need to work with layers and make the layer of the outline (or line art)multiplay so you can paint the background with out afecting your line art at all. then just flatten the image back when you are done.
