Well, this is an incredible site, you'rw so lucky to have found it!
As for constructive criticism... i think you sharpened it too much, and the contrast is a little high, i think.
I'd suggest doing the whole image in a sepia-like tone? It'd add an old world feel to it, i think.

thanks very much for for your comments everyone! they are much appreciated:o) to be fair, i haven't actually used the sharpen filter. just been comparing with the original & the changes are definately more in texture & shadow. the effect is meant to be semi-painted - but i guess how big it appears on the screen & monitor size also affects perception. perhaps a 800 x 600 might have been more effective. just got carried away wanting to show detail:o)
