Description
Jaw-Bone is coming along pretty good, but a little slow and leery. Guess you would be to if you got bite by a rattler.
Crossing the water by the steps, I found a rather deep spot. The mules went around it. I guess I looked pretty funny popping to the surface cussing and spitting water. The mules gave me the Hee Haw. Glad they had a laugh about it, but if I run out of food I'll remember that laugh..
The going was slow but smooth until I came to a wash out and had to pull the mules up on a narrow ledge. They showed me how they got the rep for being stubborn. The air turned blue around me while I was splaining to the mules about their mother and not knowing who their daddy was. That's how you talk to mules, and it worked. We walked the ledge, Came around a sharp bend and there was the 2nd water.
The air was silent and still. The heat hung on my shoulders and hit my face like a 60 mile per hour wind that doesn't move. So very quite, almost death like.
I felt nervous, and was worried. Such a change in the air just by coming around a bend. Sometimes a change like that makes you wonder and gives a weird feeling of things.
The ledge continued on down to a mud bank that separated the 2 ponds, then up the short slope and along another ledge on the other side.
The 1st pond was small and clear. The 2nd was bigger and deeper.
It's early, but I'd better set up camp. Maybe take a swim and get some of this trail dust of me. I found the cross to show I was on the right path.
Right now I figure I'm about 5 miles into this range. If my translation is right the next way-point is the water by the cathedral.
