Description

Apophysis 2b17b and PSP Let us go then, you and I, When the evening is spread out against the sky Like a patient etherized upon a table; Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets, The muttering retreats Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels And sawdust restaurants with oyster shells: Streets that follow like a tedious argument Of insidious intent To lead you to an overwhelming question.... The birch trees bent and crooked White and heavy from winter snow and ice Form a canopy over creeks and streams Finally breathing free, ice melting into vapor That hangs, frozen, in the cold April air of False promise. The snow has melted, deer and moose, Thin and lean Search for new life in barren fields, brown and low, Not yet green, not yet alive. Dead and asleep while crows fly and rat

Thank you all for the wonderful comments. For those who have asked the first part of the poem is from T.S.Eliot's "Love Song...", which first appeared in England in 1917 and reflected his views on the alienation of the era. The second part was written by me, a weak attempt at imitating Eliot's style to evoke the same feelings of despair and alienation in the early spring time of northern New England. While we use very different times and settings I was hoping to create kind of a parallel view of life as basically fragile and ultimately lonely and fleeting in comparison to the eternity of nature and machinery.
