Description

This details the major steps for the following image. I use Corel Photo Paint 9 Digital Camera Edition. Why? It was on sale and I was familiar with PP5 from years ago. It was, therefore, somewhat 'home turf.' Do I recommend it? Don't know. I scream at the documentation and am not happy with some features, but I'd like to find a plan that lets me rent/test drive software before plunking out cash to beta test some honker. PP9 is not a honker. Obtuse, it can be. OK. That's off my chest. This is also not about teaching all you grammas and granpas how to suck eggs. It is, however, about sharing techniques. Maybe they are kludgey, but then maybe so is the author. We gots to deal with it. 1. Original photo. Big yellow 1. was not on the ground. This is a Pentax Optio on automatic settings. It's not bad. I like it. None of that is debatable. 2. First I use the 'intellihance' series of filters. If you are not familiar with this (it's the egg thing again, be patient), the user can pre-set settings for contrast, sharpness, etc. and use that as a starting point. I gots the feel for the Pentax, so my intellihance usually compensates for what I see as iffy performance. In this case, we darkened shadows, set contrast fairly high, and sharpened things up. Mostly showed up as details in the foliage. Then I used the emboss filter. Selected natural color and used minimal settings. Main effect here is in the window detail of the high rise. Also in the stones of the bastion. 3. There is no number 3. Stop looking for it. The lower left image is the same as number 2 except the frame effect has been called in. PP9 has several pre-set frames. Usually I use them with dark colors, very feathered edges, and high Transparency to form a darker border that draws the eye to the center of the image. Lately I've been using a white border with less feathering and less Transparency to create a ragged border. The dark border tended, IMO, to create a tunnel view. I was trying for the reverse by using white. 4. The last image is something different. Under art strokes I selected the pointilism filter. In the original battlements I used water color filter and you can see some of the color bleed. It's particularly noticeable around the high rise. I think the embossing makes it stand out more and act more like actual water flow. In the Riverwalk series, I used a filter much like the pointilism one: that was the soft pastel filter. So, that's it. I hope this was useful for some.

You are most welcome. You gotta play with those settings a bit to see what works. TedZ or PapaG reminded me all about that stuff some months back. Makes a BIG difference. I'm even reworking some earlier postings. Do enjoy!!!
