"...But the Nihaimurh girl with the gossamer hair had lingered, waiting for him. And when she saw him sleep she stole back, and slipped softly up a tree, where she sat gazing down on him. Presently his comrades noticed that he was missing and the woods quivered to their voiceless call of dismay, but the long hairs of her brows danced and they went on reassured. Back to their place they went, whither they would have taken Nicholas; and so he missed the chance of going where no mortal had ever been. But nightlong in the boughs above him watched and guarded the silver-haired girl with the ageless eyes."
