Description

Mehndi is the traditional art of adorning the hands and feet with a paste made from the finely ground leaves of the henna plant. The term refers to the powder and paste, and the design on the skin, as well as the party or ceremony. Henna is a small shrub called hawsonia inermis, and is also know as Henne, Al-Khanna, Al-henna, Jamaica Mignonette, Mendee, Egyptian Privet, and Smooth Lawsonia. Henna grows in hot climates and is found in India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Persia, Syria, Egypt, Morocco, Sudan and other North African, Asian and Middle Eastern countries. The leaves, flowers, and twigs are ground into a fine powder, then mixed with hot water. Various shades are obtainable by mixing with the leaves of other plants, such as indigo. Tea, coffee, cloves, tamarind, lemon, sugar, and various oils are also used to enhance the colour and longevity of design. There is still some speculation as to the first origin of the use of henna. What is known for sure is that henna has been used as a cosmetic, as well as for its supposed healing properties for at least 5000 years. Centuries of migration and cultural interaction make it difficult to determine where certain traditions began. There is some historical evidence to support that mehndi as an art-form may have originated in ancient India. The Bangles are also of Traditional Indian Mixed Alloy with some precious stones. This set of Bangles is over 100 years old. The model is my sweetest neice Mandvi who has the perfect hand for the above display. 3 cheers to Mandi ~ SNAKEY ~

Oh, Raj, thank you for this!!! It's been one of my longtime wishes, to collect henna paintings; of course, it is pretty difficult to me as I have very little chanse to do it myself :-) Here in Israel there is, too, a tradition to do a henna painting and a small selebration to a bride before wedding. Can you shot the foot hennas, too or it will be considered unproper? By the way, I can't recognise your camera here... on a moment I even thought you finally have another one, better ;-)

Absolutely beautiful. So much to see, and what a handsome hand. I had Mehndi done on my hand at the Kali temple in Kolkota and then worried about it for days - would I have to see my patients in UK with it?
