Description

Flowers are attractive by their beauty. But that can have a price. Flying insects visiting this lady's slipper orchid (Europe's largest wild orchid) can be surprised by an obligatory overnight stay. The purple petal at the top closes the entrance of the 'shoe' and the insect is caught! Next day it opens again, and the flying insect can leave this flower. With seeds, naturally! The orchid pictured here grows on a special place. It is the very location where 21 young people (from Australia and New Zealand) lost their lives canyoning in the Saxetbach while they were surprised by a thunderstorm. Trees and rocks came down and covered those who could not escape quickly enough. A memorial is erected there to commemorate this tragic event. The beauty on this location forms a weird contrast. Let us not forget that nature can be beautiful and harmful! Minolta X-700 (Fuji Sensia 100 II, 50 mm) Thanks for your attention and your always valuable comments

These flowers look familiar, as if I've seen them before. Yes, nature is not to be fooled with, as we are smaller than it is. Beautiful photo. Excellent POV!
