The valley is broad and deep. Trees are sparse. Winter has laid it's carpet of snow. It's cold and the temp is about 15 degrees. The snow is packed. At night each step in the snow can sound like a pistol shot to the ears of prey and predator alike. The Moon throws it's light from over the Mountain to the west lighting the east wall and part of the creek. A clear night with many stars, but the lone Deer can't enjoy the beauty of the night. One young buck steps out for a drink. Leery, nervous, but thirsty he has to do it. Separated from the others, maybe only a mile away or maybe ten, he is scared and alone. He knows the wolf or lion is out there, if both are stalking him it's he will need a lot of luck to make it to tomorrow. Even a real hungry Bob cat would take a chance. He drinks quickly, short sips and then the head comes up. He can smell them on the air. Fear Where are they. Nervous. Drink, Look, Drink A crunch of the snow and the head comes up.
