Although the motif doesn't preserve a good contrast, you did the best. Nice clear shot, which tells us a lot about the situation.

Definitely looks like some place I would be found. I would tone down the brightness of the stipe on jacket and those shoes, and slightly increase contrast in the nearer rock textures. Did you try Curves instead of Levels ? on b&w it is easier to control, well sort of ~ I see others sense a little better dynamic range of tones would be valuable. Instead of just Desaturate, I have taken to applying an Adjustment Layer of Gradient Map with a b&w gradient, then another over that, of Curves ... I also often need to add another, maybe, of Levels, with a mask (actually, you don't have time to read what all I do to some images but then they won prizes though :) ) -- in this case I would do that extra Levels and mask the effect to just the face, because, we will never get to see the eyes well enough to please a photo judge but, the face itself is placed where it has potential to be a little brighter against that darker portion of background tones as well as slightly enhance what detail is in the face's shadows ~ and such sweetenings would draw attention away from these complaints and toward seeing the joy of being on that hike!
