Description

Well, I'm working on this piece from LOTR that I've wanted to do for quite awhile. I am not entirely happy with the piece yet and need some advice please! This is my first really postworked piece, as it is a combination of two renders(the part above the falls and the lower land) and I had to add the mist from the falls(airbrushed in PS...I'm not too happy with the result yet). Any helpful comments would be GREATLY appreciated!!

nice that someone else has tried doing something from lotr :) I think it's a great idea, but the colors could be alot better, the water could be improved aswell...play a bit with the surface...this picture looks a bit to much yellow, anyway I'm glad you're doing this, keep on with it :)

You're doing much more than I would on an image... Maybe make the water less dark & foamy? Keep trying, anyway!

First of all, awesome idea! Agree to the above about the water, but what i miss most is the lack of the impression of height difference. One idea might be to create a terrain with two main height levels and make to renders with different water heights. Then combine the two pics and hide the transition in the haze ;) This is just an idea. I havent tried such a thing myself, i have to admit!

Well, for improving the distance, I'd make one single HQ-Render with no water and only 1 (one) black surface-layer with no bumpiness.
You can use this render as a Layer (I use mostly 'difference-layer' with 19-38% opacity), maybe blur this 'distance-mask'.
The surface itself does not need any improvement IMO.
The water looks really good this way - maybe one render without water to get rid of this lake at the top.
The mist is a hard work. Maybe get a picture of some clouds, desaturate them and use them in a layer set to 'lighten' and a layermask to hide unwanted areas.

The one suggestion I would make is to decrease the density of the surf and increase the density of the foam in the water. Then, it would have a much softer look and not contrast so much. You have a good start here. I would like to see you improve upon the picture. There are a lot of possibilities here.
