The Big gray has been in charge for 3 years now. He has taken good care of the "Boys." He has meet all the challenges and only lost 3 mares to predators. In this valley he is supreme.. A very nice and isolated canyon, no roads or trails. Very secure for the wild life. Large domes and mtn's, waterfalls, trees and good grazing. Sweet grass, brittle bush and many other types of forage. Winters are pleasant and Summers are warm. Horse Heaven.. He has had a good run at leader and soon some younger Stallion will take over. But being a horse he doesn't know that, or even care until that moment comes. Today as he lead the "Boys" to the river he caught a new scent, a new herd. Everyone was excited, new "people", new blood for the herd. The Big Black Stallion eyed the big Gray from the south bank. They whinnied to each other. Telling each other of their battles and trials. Horse talk, like two high school kids. The gray knew the Black was younger and stronger. He knew his time was short. Soon, not today but soon the Black would changeling him, defeat him and combine the herd. Maybe he would move the herd to the far end of the canyon. He doesn't want to give a inch. The choices are limited. But for now they will live separate. They is more than enough room for both herds. Still the urge, the need to conquer is always there, even in the animal world.
