Description

There she is, my frigid girlfriend, the Jungfrau! On this altitude snow makes it more difficult to go on, but inexperienced as I were, I decided to choose to go in between a lower track and a higher track. The snow covers the markings and going in between two tracks seemed to me the best solution not to get lost. That was not a wise decision.... Although the original slide is OK, the scan was not what I expected to see. Graininess, that's just something that appears on the slide and that's OK with me, and stripes. Another slide scanner did even worse! Oh boy! Slides can do really better, especially when it's concerning high contrasts. How do digital camera's react to this? Minolta X-700 (Fuji Sensia 100, 50 mm) Thanks for your attention and your always valuable comments

It is perfect! For me digital is best in open air if there are not vertical right lines, allways tend to curve; I dont know why! At any rate your shot is awesome.

Well, I have no problems with high contrast motives with the Nikon D70 - okay it depends on the settings - but the camera's RAW-files give you a range of setting your final image from -2 to +2 stops.
The stripes and the grain are really sad. This such a nice scenery place.

Beautiful image, those cloud shrouded snowy peaks are so majestic. To bad about the bad scan...yes digital would not show that at all. You might have some noise at the higher ISOs, but at ISO 100 it should be pretty clean. About isacos comment, the curved lines are due to lens distortion. Get a high end digital camera like the new Rebel and it shouldn't be an issue. BTW, you girlfriend is a real looker!!

Heel erg mooi, maar het lijkt me hier wel erg koud, om er eens lekker bij te gaan zitten en inspiratie op te doen.

It is very beautiful! I have both digital camera and scanner. Usually I prefer using the digital camera. However, just purchased an HP 4600 - only $68.00 after rebates, and it does very well. I do love the scene, as it is so awesome.

Its a very beautiful landscape, you lucky bastard !!! :oP In high contrast pictures the dark areas might have some minor grain, but it wouldnt be visible at the size of your shot, only at full size... Anyway, you did an excellent job my friend, too bad about the scan though... And, being inexperienced in high-altitude hiking myself, would you tell me why that was a bad choice ?

Too bad about the scan, but I still love the shot, majestic and pure. I can think of worse places to get lost ;)

Guess with a digital cam, it could be easier but you'll need some practice too. Shouldn't be a problem for you. Anyways this one is fine despite some technical problems. Hope you've found your path again :-)

Hi, I like your pictures. I have a Fuji F700 with a new special Sensor for extendeted range of exposure. In theroy it should work much better, as it is combining 2 sensors for each of the 3.1 M pixel (together 6,2 M) to extend not the resolution but the exposure range of each pixel, but in praxis it works good, but not much better than other digitals. Anyway i'm happy with it, because it is light and small, and i use it more often than my older Canon EOS. I use an Epson Perfection flatbed scanner with Dia -adapter to scan slides and negtives, but i am not fully satisfied. I intend to buy a Reflecta ProScan 3600 Film-Dia-Scanner because i read good test about it. "Slides can do really better" as they have a wider range of density for exposure than digifotos. But the widest range of density you can get with a negative. Only negative scanner with minimum 42 bit of color-resolution (3*14Bit) can reproduce the full range of density of a negativ or slide. The dot per inch should be minimum 1800pi to get 4,8 M pixel (at 2400dpi you get 8,64 M pixel result). A negative shot with a very good SLR-camera should have a resolution of about 12M pixel (3000dpi) which is only comparable with most expensive digital camearas. Another problem with digital photos (both direct or scanned) is that TFT - screens have much less contrast range than the picture itself. For instance 500:1. I ordered a new Synmaster 191P, the first with a contrast 800:1 (that is still less than aproximately 1000:1 of a slide or 1500:1 of a negativ, but it shoud be fairly good) If you prefer "easy use" and very good results i would suggest a digital camera. If you want perfect pictures and have plenty of time, then scan it with an expensive high resolution film-scanner (costs 600 to 1200 or more EUR, scantime between 30 seconds and 2 or more minutes, depending on model and resolution). Even more time you need to optimize and remove scratch and dust with Photoshop or other software (I do it ony on my best shots). At the resolution you posted it, your picture looks almost perfect, i rank it excellent!

Another beautiful photo, you are a lucky person to be able to see such sights firsthand!

despite grain and stripes, this is a moving and beautiful image! My ancestors, native American Indians, found guidance in reading the skies, and so I believe there is much to be learned from those clouds surrounding the Jungfrau! Sometimes the guidance we seek is elusive and we must be diligent in our pursuit. We don't always know what path will be the wise one and we may fumble along, but that is the way it is as we journey through life.
