Does anyone have any ideas on how I can make this into a jewelry box. i would like to make the top open and have some kinda of velvet liner inside the cross.

Use polygon mode and select the polys for the top half. Go to the Structure Menu --> Edit Surface --> Split. This creates a separate polygon object from your selected polygons. Delete the selected polygons. This will give you 2 surfaces. Now it just a matter of moving the axis to here you need the rotation to be, and maybe given the object some thickness with the Make Thicker plugin.

Is the make thicker plugin free? Where do I get it? Thanks for the input and Comments everyone.

No, it says with a lathe nurbs boolean but i meant sweep nurbs. I mean i drew a spline and swept it with a circle and booleaned the cross with that.

Great image! just a question... are the names a bump material? or its really part of the model? Please, answer!

the names are pretty simple. I used a text spline, then parented it with an extrude nurbs object. I placed the letters so that they were slightly intersecting the top of the cross and used a boolean object so that it removed this portion.
