Description
Canon 10D + Sigma 105mm EX Macro
ISO 200 f9.5 1/200
To compliment -seek- and his photo living tank here is another stag beetle.
I took the shot wanting to create a b-movie look - ants that ate paris kind of thing. I love these creatures, and wanted to give them the drama they deserve.
The title comes, I am afraid to admit, from an obsession with all things Buffy. The line is from the final series, and seemed to fit. The irony, of course, is than many scientists believe that these creatures as adults don't eat at all.
Thanks for viewing...I've missed posting and commenting and look forward to getting back into doing both VERY soon.

Inga - thanks so much...it's lovely to be back :)
Gene - passes the old spice underarm... I wasn't wanting to say...but... (exams were...ok. The War Lit exam was fun...nice questions...what I expected...but at 4 hours it nearly killed me. The others were shorter, but the questions were not so fun. It's a good thing I'm not desperate for excellent marks or I'd be upset. I'm just concentrating on them being 'over')

Nice to see ya back! Very nice macro shot! But I don't understand the connection between f9.5 with the DOF. Shouldn't there be less blur in the background with this setting? I get such DOF with settings of f3.0 . Very impressive picture, clever used b&w. Uh so small but so dangerous. Never underestimate the power of the macro world!

Welcome back... It is absolutely horrid!!! yaaagh! Reminds me of when we lived in the country & had frogs coming up the pipes into the toilet bowl! An ideal horror this groping macro terrorist!

Ikarius - Although I'm no expert, I think you'll find that the difference is the distance between the bug and my lens. This shot hasn't been cropped at all...there was maybe an inch between the bug and my lens, and so the f9.5 is still quite shallow (especially concidering that this beatle is around 8cm long). I took some f4 shots, wanting to issolate the 'antlers' from the body...now THEY are shallow ;)
addiek - thanks...but really...he's not THAT bad. The antlers of the males are actually less powerful than the tiny female ones. The only really scary thing about them is their lack of coordination in flight - when we used to have lots, you'd think for a minute it was hailing...only to find lots of heavy bugs bouncing off the windows ;)

Great shot...I think you achieved that B movie look. It would work great for a movie titled the radioactive attack beetle from plant 6

It's nice to see you back, Stephen :). Hope your exam sessions were not too hard... ;) This a great shot, taken in an emotional way, as always. A very mysterious mood... Black and white was the good choice.

yay - you're back! :) congrats on getting thru your exams. i love the perspective of this foto, and i love this insect. when i was living in england, i discovered that magpies love to eat these guys, but not their heads (can't imagine why!)...which was why our back garden was full of stag-beetle-heads...lol...i collected them for awhile... and mailed a bagfull to a my best friend in the states... heh...

Hey buddy. Nice to see you back. You've definitely made a grand entrance with this one! I don't get squeamish easily, or generally at all, but insects just freak me right out! Great shot, nonetheless. Very B-movie-esque. My favourite movie when I was younger was "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes". Great flick. you should check it out!
Niutek
Brrr! Brrr... Photography & horrors, indeed! A horror shot! But an excellent one :D
FearaJinx
Nice! I like the B-movie feel! And I love Buffy so the title caught my attention I knew it looked formiliar. Wonderful work! Alfred Hitchcock had used a lot of POV in his movies as well. You should check him out too, along with killer tomatoes. lol
