Description

Thanks for viewing ! Comments are welcome... What is it ??? If anyone knows please tell me !! It is an insect like i have never seen before and i cant find anywhere what it might be. This is a kind of wasp (i guess) but it hovers like a hoverfly ! It also is very territorial i have seen it attacking bumblebees and other flying insects, very agressively !! It feeds on nectar, i have seen them at it a lot. I know the photos arent of the best quality but i had to be very quick because these creatures are lightning fast and obviously have very keen eyesight. On numerous occasions they where startled be my presence and then hovered around my camera as if they were checking out what was following them. These creatures are totally awesome to look at, i hope to make more and better photos of them but i cant promise it. :o) Thanks for all your wonderful comments on my last upload "Hard Worker" !! And now for some sad news. This morning when everyone was still asleep, a violent hailstorm came down on Bugworld. The hailstones were at least 1 cm across ! The devastation is total. Most plants are totally smashed and full of holes. The flowers... well lets not talk about the flowers... The real victims here are the inhabitants of Bugworld, the bugs. How many wounded or killed is not yet known. But hundreds or even thousands or bugs have become homeless this morning. More on this tomorrow.... :o) Many thanks, Enmos

Maybe they are Yellow Jackets? More light on their back might help identify them. Some people call a hornet that looks like this "Cutter Bees", because they will cut up meats or vegetables alike and carry away the pieces back to the hive, and they can make quick work of scavenging away spare food. Many hornets and wasps will turn out to be hunting small insects, so I'm not sure if they also gather nectar, but they may actually be predators foraging in flowers because they know there will be insects looking for nectar and crawling among the stems and leaves there. If you can get a look at good detailed reference pictures of some of these breeds, you may be able to match, or eliminate, those identifications. (Nature sometimes recharges and renews after disasters, sometimes catastrophe is just what was needed to keep an ecostructure stable, and I bet you'll find Nature has a plan B and plan C and plan Whatever, waiting to be implemented, no matter how things may change moment by moment, which may prove to be very fascinating to study and observe next.)

Pity for your garden. Buggopolis is mourning.... Have seen stunning (even literally!) insects like these eating parts of bees, but don't know what species they are. Great shots anyway, love the left one on the Salvia flower, very beautiful DOF!

We had the same hail storm last week - devastation is total unfortunately. They will come back no worries. Your image is lovely as always Jeroen whether it was rushed or not!

Don't be modest, the pictures are great! I think I found the species in my insects guide: "Wolbij". I'm sorry I don't know the name in English but the latin name would be "anthidium manicatum", feel free to translate! V
