Description

Simone stands at the door of her cell, looking out at the cold, bleak prison block of the Vixen Temple. The age-old walls drip with condensation. They almost seem alive, groaning and heaving with menace. The air is stale and musty, thick with the miserable desperation of untold numbers of prisoners in the years before her. A shadow falls across the stone floor outside her cell. She backs away from the bars, her lip quivering with fear. Unknowingly, uncontrollably, she starts to whimper. Memories of unspeakable violence flash through her mind. She tries to shake them away. The shadow gets larger. Footsteps can be heard now, swiftly sneaking, coming closer. Simone presses herself against the back wall of her cell. Deep inside she knows it is either Sinistra or a Vixen guard come to see her; but all she can see now is her father's terrified face; all she can hear are her mother's gurgling, choking screams. Finally the owner of the shadow appears at the bars of the cell. It is not Sinistra. It is not a guard. It's just a girl...and she is beautiful. "My name is April," the girl says. "I'm here to rescue you." The nightmarish memories vanish instantly from Simone's mind. She runs to the bars and stares at her rescuer, captivated. For the first time in many weeks, she smiles.
