Description

Trying something a little different tonight. This is a black and white because the terrain material was in black and white (based on a NASA/JPL photo from the Mars Orbiter. Added the new Martian dirigible with modifications suggested by some of you. It is not a turboprop jet, rather than a jet and it has had a streamlining added to the gas bag section. Otherwise, it remains essentially the same. Oh, I did widen the wing due to information that I have learned about VTOL characteristics. What you see here is a supply dirigible approaching the Northern Martian ice cap, which is about 4 to 6 kilometers away in this POV. The dirigible does not usually fly very high above the surface as the thickness of the Martian atmosphere thins out rapidly the farther from ground level one gets. This airship is bringing supplies to a science station a 100 kilometers beyond the edge of the ice. The airships, along with the Trans-Martian Monorail System, are the major carriers of goods and supplies around Mars. Highways do not exist and "roads" are just rough trails and not very many of those. The dirigibles can't supply the Tharsis Bulge, with Olympus Mons and three other huge volcanoes. Much of it is so high that an airship doesn't have enough atmosphere to effectively use the craft's propellers. Olympus Mons even rises above the atmosphere. There has been some work on creating a rocket powered airship, but so far, such attempts have not met with success. The Matronauts often use the airships for personnel transfers to different exploration zones. Thanks for looking! J. PS. Sparky the Russell Fox Terrier of an earlier picture (Sleeping Dogs...) has come to life in our household. My wife and I just acquired today a new member of the family--6-1/2 week old Juli (for July). We thought about naming her Jane, so we could say we had a Jane Russell Fox terrier, but opted for the other name instead. She sleeps on my lap even as I type.
