Description

An Imperial Fleet in the Wall formation defends the approaches to the planet Aberdeen. The backbone of the wall is the Battleship. Heavily armed and armored it is "capable" of holding the line and taking the battle to the enemy. In support of the battleships are the Medusa point defense ships. Their primary function is to defend the wall from enemy missile salvos and the swarms of enemy small craft who venture too close. To the rear of the wall are positioned teams of destroyers and missile boats. The destroyers act as a fire brigade to reinforce the wall where needed. The missile boats wait for the opportunity to dart forth and deliver their wares. Behind them are a small group of light carriers. Their fighters swarms are almost too small to be seen at this distance. This was a fun one. I had wanted to do a series of epic scale space scenes for a while. They will will show scenes from the Second Interstellar War. The Imperial ships are mostly done for now. Some of the Enemy ships will be the next project. All of the models were made in Wings and are fairly detailed except for the fighters. This scene was a challenge in a number of ways. The number of models drove the poly counts very high. The epic scale also blurs many small details. A fighter is about 3-5 pixels at 1024 x 768. The original render was 2400 by 1800 but that is way too large to post. ;) It took about 8 hours to render this one so most future scenes will have smaller numbers of vessels. It was worth it though, the detail of the the larger image is very high (you can tell a fighter from a star.) Oh Well... On to the next thing!

The ships have a little to symmetrical formation. And there isn't a whole lot of texture variation. The scene lighting is terrible. I don't want to tear down your hard work, it looks like you did a good job modeling, and a long time rendering all those polys. The lighting is the most important thing to fix here, make the primary light off to the left, and then a secondary light coming from the direction of the planet, and then a very soft light that comes from the direction of the camera. I can't tell if you have ambiance on or not, but ambiance should always be turned off. With that, It's a good job considering the limitations of bryce. Keep up the good work!

I love it! This is exactly the kind of grand battle fleet scene that always captivated me as a kid(and still does, lol)! The models are great, as is the background. Obviously a great deal of work went into this.
