Description
This is one of those tiny hover flies you will see hovering motionlessly in the air, periodically darting about with great speed and agility.
I searched for about an hour on the net looking to identify this particular species. I found some that were similar but with slightly different markings on the abdomen.

Great Shot.. The colours on its wings are just awsome. its really great but you could have cut a bit on the left side to make have the fly in the center. Other then that.....BEAUTIFUL.

Thanks for the comment -Mime- I thought of doing this but I decided to leave the image exactly as it was taken without cropping. I figured the black in the bottom LH corner might give the image a little more depth - or even give some clue as to the circumference of the flower - leading to an idea of just how small this fly is. (It is only a few millimeters in length)

This is the Scaeva Pyrastri which only the Mated females Hibernate this is a common variety as opposed to Microdon Eggeri which pretend to be Honey Bees (Apis Mellifera) esp in the antennae which is longer than usual among flies. It is not a very common species.. Nice photography Matt!!

Wonderful shot. I just discovered these guys this year, Challenging subjects, and interesting insects both. Makes this shot that much more special to me. Hope you've sorted out your camera troubles, and replaced your gear. Big run of eagles here in the spring.
