If this work bothers you, good! If not, then you are part of the problem. Ok, I'm getting off my soapbox now...

...good point you have here. Why in the hell I know the names of top supermodels? Do I really need to know? Could be nothing more futile?

I love Spice Girls!!! They r sooooo pop! And Madonna too. She is like a chameleon. And Calista?!?! Why? Don' t know about her, but Ally McBeal is 1 of the best tv serie ever done....So, why does people hate true pop culture?

7:18AM | Mon, 30 July 2001

wow guys.... now for a female point of view??? should'nt we be blaming their handlers??? is'nt it the producers of their music and their tv shows that are to blame??? Shouldnt Hollywood be put up there on the firing line too? look at Judy Garland who was told she was too fat,so she took pills till it killed her.Marilyn Monroe could'nt handle the stress that Hollywood put her through so she drank and pilled her way to death... so instead of saying that these women are to blame, look to the handlers....

bonbon: Point well made. This isn't a "bash women" work. The question I'm asking is why are we so obsessed with this type of person? Why is a Britney Spears so valued as a role model while a Dianne Feinstein is so universally ignored? The problem isn't with them people, its with us!

This is very reminiscent of 'Blaming the victim' - something any rape survivor knows well. Don't hate these women, hate the society that demands they be as they are, and idolizes them for it, and subjugates itself to stupidly destructive actions and appearances.

Want one more female POV? Sure... You can blame the singer or actress, but in the end she's just making a (big) paycheck. Blame the "handlers"? Well, that's more enlightened, I guess, but again, they're just making a (bigger) paycheck. If you want to blame the correct party, look at the idiot on the couch masturbating to baywatch or the vacuous bibmette with cotton candy for brains bopping her empty head to Brattney's latest drivel. Need I point out that if a couple of hundred million semi-sentient livestock weren't standing in line to hand over more and more money for an even increasing diet of this rot, the "villianesses" and "villians" who are producing it would dry up in short order. Also, while I agree, Loneglyph, that these are lousey role models, where is the list of men? Being able to throw a stupid ball makes an overgrown adolescent a role model? On a related note, I read some time ago a list that told of the highest paid "public servents" in my home state (those who get paid by the state government)... Something like six of the top ten, all in the six-figure range, were sports coaches for major universities. Now, THAT should be a criminal offense.

HonorMac: Glad you see the point I was trying to make. As for the Men that annoy me, they are far too numerous to fit in any one picture. They also annoy me for very different reasons (the likes of Bush as an example, who are only interested in their own personal fame and riches; and would destroy the planet to get it.) The point of this work is that we have women starving themselves to get into a size 0 dress, having harmful chemicals implanted into their breasts, and coats of makeup to cover anything that might be perceived as natural or real. And then we have women who idolize them and want to be them. Its a sickness that I wanted to point out. The sickness of men is another story (and worthy of an entirely separate work of art.)

well this is a true impression of American culture, I truly love this work. Too many Americans are focalized on physical material means and aspire to become the dream person. This leads to many problems in our culture especially among our teens such as anorexia bulemia, etc. It is not necessarily the actressess fault that they have become an American Pop Icon, after all isnt that every little girls dream. Americans are materialistic, and if they can attain material bliss by looking good, or singing, or acting (well more of the first one) then thats great. But you can blame the actressses, its American society as a whole. If us as Americans, didnt idolize that, then they wouldn't be the popular icons that they are. Americans are more willing to spend their hard earned dollars on promting this persona even in leu of their own physical health. The average American will drop $15 dollars on a CD of their favorite muscian without a second thought, but would forego using that same $15 to pay for a doctors office call to have that unusual spot checked out on their arm. The Here and now is always more important to our society than the future. Thats our culture, so it is wrong to hate those that become icons of that culture, as for we are the ones that put them there

People have always been obsessed with physical appearance and beauty. Weren't the first Olympic games conducted by nude athletes? Hmm... wonder why? Because the Greeks were enamoured with the human form. How about 18th century men wearing powder and wigs? How about Egyptians and makeup? The ancients wore jewelry, Victorians wore corsets, and we have the Thigh-Master. Men and women are sexual animals, violent and territorial, emotional and looking to reproduce. Why is pornography a billion-dollar business? Engaging plot lines? We cant seem to get enough of beauty and physicality, muscles and tanned skin. Sure weve come a long way from the Nuclear Family of the early fifties. Of course a woman should make as much as a man for doing the same job. Thats not what this is about. This about magazine covers, and TV commercials, billboards, and Victorias Secret. Let me ask you this: Whom would you rather see on the cover of Cosmopolitan or Vogue Catherine Zeta Jones or Senator Hillary Clinton? This is not the age of superficial and shallow people. We are not vainglorious and egomaniacal. We are human. Always have been, always will be. Personally, I think we should get off our high horse and join the rest of the world in accepting our sexuality. You people really need to watch some foreign TV to understand just how backwards and puritanical Americans are about sex. And as for the objectification of women... Sorry, but as long as men enjoy looking at pretty faces and long tan legs, the advertisers will keep feeding it to us. People like to get it on, and they want to look pretty, and all the political correctness in the world wont erase that fact. Our desire to procreate is probably the most powerful of all our basic instincts, and it therefore governs almost everything we do. So why this anger when we see yet another gorgeous face getting more attention than someone does who truly contributes something to society? Because we can see what we ARE, and we can see what we COULD be. Forgive yourselves... youre only human.

u can keep on yelling about the planet dieing, but dont say that the politicians are doing something about it cuz they are'nt!!! they dont give a shit, if they did we could save this planet and bring it back to lucious forests and happyness in less than 100 years, but instead it will be the opposite because people like president bush prefers full blown tactical missile defence instead of a full scale worldly cooperation against pollution (that the USA are fuckin alot responsible of). at least some celebrities use their fame to bring trough their message about things like pollution, poor countries, etc (cameron dias is a good example)
