Description

Another Martian dirigible headed for a distant settlement in the nether regions of the Martian frontier. Two passengers eagerly peer through the many windows at the rusty, forbidding landscape that leisurely unfolds below them. One is newly arrived on Mars from Earth, the other from the Lunar colony on the Moon. For the Earthling, the monochromatic redness of the barrens is forbidding, while for the lunarian, used to the gray bleakness and sameness of the lunar plains, so much color and variety of scenery is a welcome, inviting, liberating change. One colonist wonders fearfully if he has made a dreadful mistake. The other, a woman, is filled with hope and expectation, confirmed in her decision to migrate to Mars. For most of the old Martian hands on board, there is nothing remarkable about the terrain unfolding before their eyes. For them, it is just a boring interlude until they arrive at their destination, but to the crew of the dirigible, who have made this trip hundreds of times, each flight unfolds some new subtlety that that they had never noticed before. As they pass above the dark dunes of Nochais Terra, the co-pilot is thinking that she would not trade places with anyone else on all of Mars--a sentiment shared by her fellow crew members. Thanks for looking. Jeremy
