Description
When I first started out in the design industry, everything was done by hand, on drawing boards, with the introduction of desktop publishing the industry was turned upside down virtually overnight, many people including typesetters and later on repro people, who each in their own individual and unique skills through years of experience in the industry disappeared.
And for me, I was a complete technofobic, but that was about 15 years ago, luckily I moved with the times, and my computer training was 'Here's the manual to read, that job has to be done in an hours time!'
This image was done a few years ago, when I came accross a pile of 1950's DIY magazines in a junk shop and really was an excercise in retouching. It sums how I feel things are going now, a major chunk of my work now is 'tarting up' client 'Word' files in Quark. I have seen a steady decline in the quality of design work out there, poor concepts (made good with wizzy Photoshop filters), shoddy typography, etc, etc. Good design is out there, but you have to look for it.
Thanks for listening - sorry for ranting on for so long!

hey, I like it..very creative anachronism going on here..as I used to applaud the word processor, 'which has brought bad writing to the reach of millions..'..;) much the same..keep 'em coming..
Hythshade
Wonderful . I agree its a brilliant anachronism for sure. I think this really sums things up. Well done.

I started out doing paste-up and was reluctant to use a computer at first...now my Mac and I are inseparable! I too wish that people would leave the designing to the professionals. There is too much ugliness in the world already without PC users adding to it with their lame attempts at design.

I was trained the old way, long hours in art school keylining, learning printing, comping, sketching, speccing type... wanted to be an airbrush illustrator, taught myself how to use one of those quite well eventually. Spent my time in the camera room, stripping negs and shooting PMT's (lineshots) doing marker comps, doing paste up, and emptying waste paper baskets. Finally made it to Art Director. Started with a Mac in 1986 at an all digital production house in New Mexico. Test marketed some of the industry standards back then. I share your sentiment, but with a mind to remember there was an awful lot of truly horrible design back then as well. The tools have changed, the jobs and the clients haven't. "if the concept is good, your secretary can do the art." said old J W Thompson, I believe.
