EXPERTS fear up to 15,000 stray dogs were poisoned before Athens Olympics so the city looks "pristine".
Authorities in the Greek capital fear the sight of packs roaming the streets would damage the country's bid to show it is modern and civilised, the RSPCA said.
David Bowles of RSPCA International has been helping to train Greek officials to catch and treat strays humanely.
He said: "We're seriously concerned thousands of dogs will be poisoned so Greece can show Athens is a pristine, modern city. It would be barbaric and would solve nothing."
Another senior RSPCA official added: "If the Greeks continue to poison dogs they can't consider themselves civilised."

Apparently only the "special" people are being allowed to comment these days... Anyway, excellent picture and commentary. This situation is sad, yet very indicative of how stupid we humans are. I live in a the American midwest, in a very average subdivision, where people poison their lawns with horrible chemicals so that they will be more green. No thought appears to be given to the quality of the soil, air, or water. Screw the next generation, I guess...or at least the attitude is "out of sight, out of mind." Just like with the dogs in Athens, people want to make things look "nice" and are willing to commit attrocities against fellow life forms to do it...to me, this means those people are either psychotic or criminal, or both. Either way, it's time to evlolve past such infantile thinking.
