where i live, we have a similar class of spider [maybe the same family? - Argiope] that create these gorgeous webs with the extra zigzagging for strength... and they build them in huge arrays, maybe spanning 4-6 feet sometimes between trees, or a tree and the roofline... spiders are my top favourite 'insect', with mantids running an extremely close second...
