Description
As mentioned in the previous post, Bossie watched with a wee bit of interest as I drove past her and headed back deep into the Nambe Indian land in search of the storied falls....after more than a few miles traveled over a narrow, single lane, rather sharply inclined and wildly winding dirt road (and with no indication of how far I might be from my destination), I finally came upon a fork in the road. There stood ( or more truly rested), at the side of a small hillside leaning up against a large mountain a small wooden shack of a building whose only indication of occupation was a row of rocking chairs across it`s well worn porch. After seeing only adobe or metal structures, a wooden building was a surprise indeed. A sign made clear I was to stop and obtain a license to go any further into the Nambe land.
Before I could even exit my rental car (a cute little white Grand Am), an ancient seeming man and friend walked over to greet me. As ominous as their sign was, these two men were delighfully friendly and enthused to see me. They encouraged me to continue taking the road less traveled, for the rewards were so much greater. In the interest of what might be a willing spirit but a weak inner fortitude, they did tell me of an easier trail, but agreed that the view was not nearly so stunning....
I took the road less traveled to the path less often hiked ....perhaps two miles up the side of the mountain. Not a trail well suited to the faint of heart nor those traveling ill shod or without lots and lots of water! But it was as the men had said it would be...well woth the walk...
Bossie looked up at me from her careful and deliberate grazing as I passed her on the way back to the main road. This time I grinned at her, rolled down my window and thanked her for being my touchstone/landmark/guardian on this part of my adventure.....
