Description

Evonish has returned from the battlefields to discover that his father has died and Evonish has succeeded him as Duke of Orsine, second in line to the throne of Rhombia. His uncle, the King, has no progeny, legitimate or illegitimate. One might think that Evonish would be a happy man, but he is not. Trapped in the memories of past battles, he constantly relives the horrors of what he has done and seen. He cannot be happy to have survived, when so many better men did not. Disillusioned and haunted, his memories of war are more real to him than his present surroundings. Concerned, his uncle has commanded his heir to live in the country at Evonish's stately country house, Fair Meadows in hopes that the pleasant environment will heal his nephew's spirit. The King has also blessed him with the company of three lovely ladies of the court. Their appointed task is to distract and solace Evonish from his feverish memories. Yet even Evonish knows the three beauties have another, more important duty; to assess his fitness for the throne. His days at Fair Meadows should be days of peace and pleasure, yet as the storm clouds build and gather to sweep over the mansion on this sultry summer evening, so Evonish's memories build up within, overwhelming his well-being and smothering his emotions, urging him on in restless motion. He sleeps alone. He paces restlessly about the house or thunders across the meadows until his mount nearly collapses. "Is this how it will be for the rest of my life?" Evonish despairs. Not to be critical & maybe I am just missing something however the light and shadows inside the courtyard implies a high bright noonish sun overhead, but the skies appear darkly overcast, which matches his mood. Shrug. The artwork and story are supurb as always. :-)

Retired, you are correct; however, although the sun is presently shining into the courtyard, what you see in the sky is a fast approching storm front. Likely within a few minutes there will be a powerful rush of wind from the storm front, followed by darkness and rain. The POV cuts off the top of the storm clouds so in this picture what is happening is not as apparent to the viewer as it is in the artist's mind. Actually it is about 11 a.m. or 1 pm., depending upon which the viewer wants it to be. For me, it is still morning.

Oh yeah... I forgot to mention that the story really makes this one. It needed the story to explain the expressions. Some illustrations don't need the story... this one does.
