Description
The old crone slowly assessed her granddaughter, so young, so innocent -- at least by all appearances. She remembered being so naive and vain and saw herself somewhat reflected in the eyes of the hot blooded girl.
"I want to know what my future holds," she insisted impatiently as the old woman shuffled her cards, her fingers gnarled and shaking.
"You will know your future soon enough, girl," the woman said with a humorless cackle.
"I want to know now," the girl said with a petulant frown.
"Very well then, my child," her grandmother said with a weary sigh, "on the Night of the Dead, go then to the mirror -- you know which one I refer to -- and gaze into it. You will see what your future holds."
The girl smiled, anxious to see what fortune awaited her. The riches, the men vying for her attention, the children she would one day bear.
Her grandmother sighed sadly, knowing the truth.
