Description
1st Crusades.
Thousands left for the Holy Land , not only crusaders/knights but also poor farmers etc....made the long journey.
Many perished from diseases, hunger and thurst before they even reached Jerusalem.
Crossing the stone deserts of Asia Minor proved fatal even for the more hardy.
The journey to Jerusalem took 3 years, from 1096 to 1099 !!!!

Beautifully understated lighting and composition that works very powerfully in this piece. i'm especially amazed at the composition...the major figure would normally lead one right out of the scene, but the sword angle to the smaller figures on the right pull one right back to the horizontal and right back into the pic....excellent, beautiful, and an especially effective somber theme! thanx!
