Description
Originally scheduled for retrofit to re-enforce her unsually thin plate, HMS Hood was diverted to take part in the hunt for Bismarck, the 52,600 ton super German battleship. HMS Hood was battle cruiser built for speed and gun power over protection. In the early morning hours of May 24, 1941, HMS Hood closed rapidly on the Bismark and as she turned to open fire with all her guns, a shell shot by Bismark pierced the thin plate of her forward magazine and she was torn apart by a vast explosion. There were three survivors of a crew of over 1000 souls. Bismark was herself sunk three days later in another engagement after her rudder was jammed by an air torpedo attack. The British battleships Rodney and King George V closed and reduced Bismark to a floating hulk. A torpedo by the cruiser Dorsetshire finally sent her to the bottom with a loss of over 2000 of her crew.
This scene depicts the explosion of HMS Hood under barrage from Bismark.

Compositionally I've always thought this type of imagery the most difficult - inherent drama that must be fit into a coherent image. Outstanding work on this one, truely excellent.

Excellent, my friend! I must say I just don't know how you do it, but you always "capture it all" and do it in such a way that one just has to stare at it to believe it! Wonderful concept, execution and a fascinating subject as well!!!!

It was the R N darkest hour. It was most ironic that a canvas sword fish aircraft was the one to jam her rudder. Fantastic work and a short sharp look at the horror of war at sea.
