Description

Santuario de Chimayo...Chimayo, New Mexico Over another rise, through more "badlands" and into the next valley I drove. Suddenly, after twists and turns and nary another car on the narrow dirt road, there it was....the Santuario de Chimayo. This is one of America's most famous and popular points of pilgrimage. Every Easter, tens of thousands of faithful, walk, crawl and arrive in wheelchairs to visit this humble chapel, and to dip their hands in the pozito, or well, in it's side room. It is not the waters, but the dirt found in this special place that is believed to hold miraculous powers of healing.

When i was there, my friend and teacher Albert Noyer would take me all over to paint and draw these places. His Chimayo woodcut was one of my favorites.
