Description

Welcome aboar a mini-tour of USS BLUEBACK in her new role as a living museum at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. Our paths crossed for a while back in 1970, so I was surprised and pleased to see that one of 'my' boats had survived the cutters' torches. Guess I was getting to watch out for them coming after me. I can be verbose, but then you will hear/read things that you just don't find in the history books, so just hang in there. {Music from Gilligan's Island} Oh to be a sailor man You got to love the ocean. But when your hands get red and rough, you use a lot of lotion. Oh to be a sailor man You're handy with the ladies. But when you're stuck upon the sea, You're only with your mateys! {/Music from Gilligan's Island} [Lyrics from a memorable episode of Mad Movies.] I'd better explain: the mermaid device is an unofficial badge usually sported by crews of the roundhulls. Being unofficial, the CO's who 'hosted' us also sported them. To paraphrase one: We wear what we want; anyone wants to get picky, let them come down here and say so. Let's get started . . . Enjoy; thanks for viewing. That's a direct order $#@!, it!

Blueback! I was attached to CSS-11 awaiting the return of my boat (USS CHICAGO SSN-721). BLUEBACK was in the process of decommissioning, and part of my job was to oversee the removal of various components. I was only there a couple weeks, but I came to appreciate the old girl. (PS, in Red October, BLUEBACKS's not the boat leaping out of the water. That's the USS HOUSTON SSN-713)

Hmmmm. Better check the BLUEBACK info at OMSI's site. They beg to differ. The old girl was an underwater thoroughbred in her day.
