Description

In world war I, "Hartmannswilerkopf" was a ferocious battle where more than 30'000 french and german soldiers died in attempt of occupying the pike of a mountain which promised a wide tactical view into the bordercountry of france and germany. The photo shows the destroyed cableway-station which the germans dig into the rocks to get supplies for their soldiers. I combined it with a picture of dead french soliders - lying near a trenchline. Every year since 1918, people still find bodies of soldiers, which come back to surface. The last one only 5 days before I visited the battleground in september 2004.

I've taken the liberty of moving this image to the 2D Gallery. It is an excellent and thought provoking piece of work. The combination with historical photos makes the 2D Gallery a more appropriate place to show this work.
