Description

The Falkirk Wheel is part of the Forth & Clyde canal. It bypasses the old lock system that used to take boats 8 to 9 hours to get through, and used thousand of gallons of water for each boat. The new super efficient wheel takes a couple of minutes and wastes only a few cupfuls of water each day. The thing is so well balanced that turning the 18,000 Tonne wheel uses less electricity than a domestic shower! Also, as you can see by the colour of the sky, Summer has finally arrived in Scotland (only five months late!)

This sounds like a cool device. I'm wondering if we see the whole thing though. It looks like a part of it is off to the right of the frame. I'd like to see it in action, lifting a boat.

This may become as famous a Scottish landmark as the Forth Rail Bridge, it certainly is a great example of engineering excellence. Great photo.

I'm familiar with the Soo Locks in Michigan, as a little boy I was amazed watching the ships lifted. This is something else altogether. I wonder if there is a size limit on the engineering? I'm already imagining something like this lifting a 1200 foot freighter.
